FRESHLY SQUEEZED

Freshly Squeezed is setting sail again in 2012 with a fresh crew of artists.

For eight weeks 20 artists work collaboratively in small groups to build interdisciplinary works based around the theme ‘island’.

The result is two nights of performance where we could be taken to a metaphorical tropical island paradise … or be confronted by the crushing loneliness felt by Robinson Crusoe.

For curator Gideon Payten-Griffiths, the challenge is bringing emerging artists together from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds so they can take bold new risks.

“It’s through a series of facilitated workshops that the artists learn about and challenge each other in a very supportive environment.”

It may not be smooth sailing for the artists who will spend two months in an artistic hothouse exploring this year’s theme through dance, theatre, design, sound, visual and video arts. In a way that’s the intention of Freshly Squeezed: fostering the fresh and rich collaborations along the way.

Participating artist Carolyn Eccles said it was the, “fast devising and experimental nature of working together” that appealed.

“What is coming out is very raw and exciting work,” added Eccles.
