This November, The Entertainment Quarter, will host an inaugural two-day street fiesta celebrating Mexico’s traditional holiday, Dia de los Muertos, or ‘Day of the Dead’.

The fiesta will come alive with Latin American bands, food stalls, street art installations, and lucha libre wrestling. All of these activities aim to increase public awareness of the Mexican community, introducing classic cultural food and beverage offerings to honour loved ones and bring families together.

A selection of Sydney’s most authentic Mexican restaurants will be present at the Dia de los Muertos Fiesta. The eateries such as Rosa Cienfuegos, Carbón, and Baja Seafood, will have curated menus to highlight different Mexican regions and cuisine styles.

Rosa Cienfuegos is dedicated to serving the Mexican community in Sydney. She has made a name for herself as the “Tamale Queen” by plating up her famous street food. Bondi’s Carbón specialises in rich South American flavours and authentic “parrilla” cooking techniques. The newly opened Baja Seafood will add a fresh Tijuana-style coastal fare to the fiesta.

The event’s sponsor, Jarritos, will feature a menu of Mexican beers, Horchata (a cinnamon and vanilla-spiced rice drink), and their signature soft drinks to complement the authentic food items. A Patrón Tequila pop-up bar will also be serving a range of classic cocktails, with an additional tequila masterclass available for attendees.

The fiesta will feature a traditional ofrendas display of candles, sugar skulls, marigold flowers, and cherished mementos. Based on these displays and cultural symbols, a tattoo station operated by Mexican Australian artist, Skullavera, will showcase unique designs.

To keep the festival alive over the two day celebration, local DJs, a live mariachi band, and tunes from Latin Australiano artist Carlos C Major will perform for guests. Of course, there will be something for everyone, with a range of kids face painting, crafts, and other fun games available that will emphasise the vibrant culture of Mexico.
