DANCE: SWEAT

Branch Nebula have a reputation for their dynamic, energetic and unconventional dance theatre. Their latest offering, Sweat, promises to be no exception. Featuring acrobatics, martial arts, football, parkour, B-boying and dance, this eclectic movement yum cha is set to an electronic noise-scape soundtrack. The piece takes a look at the invisible people in the service industry who are taken for granted on a daily basis. “It arose because some of the people we’d been working with in the past, while they may have extraordinary skills and are at the top of their game in Australia, quite often are supporting themselves with low-paid work,” says Sweat co-creator, Lee Wilson. Wilson and his partner Mirabelle Wouters, have created an interactive piece. The performers move around a standing audience in an empty space. As the show evolves the audience is directed around the room and external objects are introduced. The piece is layered with meaning and depth. “There are some moments that are quite dark when we’re responding to work situations that we’ve researched where people have endured bullying and harassment – we bring that into the work,” says Wilson. With so much to look at, Sweat will no doubt excite and engage.
