DANCE: NOCHE FLAMENCA

DANCE: NOCHE FLAMENCA

Madrid-based flamenco company, Noche Flamenca, is coming to Australia for the first time in eight years.

With dancers, singers and guitarists, the show will bring authentic flamenco in all its beauty and intensity and without any tricks or gimmicks. They aim to give weight to all aspects of flamenco and maintain the purity of this complex art form.

Artistic Director, Martin Santangelo said the history of flamenco dated back to the conquest of Spain by the Spaniards and was born from racial and cultural repression. With Jewish, Arab and Andalucian Gypsy influences, flamenco was a way of resolving this domination.

“Flamenco is the hope for the future. It is a rebel song, a scream; it is defiance, desperation,” he said. “The song and the singer are everything. The thing is how to interpret it with the guitar and the dance.”

Although not a formal part of the show, Noche Flamenca also strives to educate audiences. “The education is already there, incorporated into flamenco. Everybody connects with it. Something already takes off. It was created by so many cultures.”

Their current program opens with Camino, which was inspired by the poetry of United Nations refugee children. It reflects their strength and love for life while also capturing the origins and spirit of flamenco.
