Christmas Actually: The Music Of ‘Love Actually’ On Stage For One Night Only
After a sellout season at the Opera House, Christmas Actually – The Music of Love Actually Live On Stage returns to the stage in a one night only performance at the Sydney Coliseum Theatre.
Reuniting for the show are Libby O’Donovan OAM, Andy Cook, Alisha Todd and Tim Carroll, four entertainers who are regarded as Australian music theatre sweethearts.
“Christmas Actually is a five-star festive smash that takes audiences on a journey through the iconic music of the hit motion picture Love Actually. Led by Australian cabaret star Libby O’Donovan OAM and backed by a phenomenal live band, the show is packed with comedy, charm, and plenty of holiday spirit,” enthused Tim Carroll. “It’s a tribute to the timeless themes of love, loss, and connection that make the movie so beloved, all wrapped up in a festive theatrical experience.”
Fifteen songs are performed throughout the show including hit songs by Mariah Carey, Joni Mitchell, Eva Cassidy, Kelly Clarkson, The Beach Boys and The Beatles. Naturally, there are other Christmas favourites and some of the standout songs include All I Want For Christmas, White Christmas, Both Sides Now, God Only Knows and Jump!.
“We have four incredible musicians in our band. Together with the cast, they bring the Love Actually soundtrack to life with a vibrant and dynamic sound that truly elevates the live experience. Honestly, they’re some of the most talented musicians in the country!”
Aside from the music the show is laced with comedy that Carroll believes should keep audiences cheerful and constantly laughing.
“The comedy in Christmas Actually is both clever and heartwarming. From playful banter between the cast to tongue-in-cheek nods to the film’s quirks. The humour adds to the show’s festive cheer while staying true to the whimsy of Love Actually. The best part? Every night feels like a different show because we love riffing off the audience’s energy!”
When asked whether audiences should have watched the hit film Love Actually to enjoy this show Carroll was quick to respond.
“Not at all! While fans of the movie will appreciate the musical callbacks and references, Christmas Actually is a standalone celebration of love, music, and the magic of Christmas. It’s designed to appeal to anyone who enjoys great music and holiday cheer, regardless of their familiarity with the film”.
Christmas Actually sold out when it played at the Sydney Opera House, so what is it that makes this show so popular with audiences?
“The show’s popularity comes from its perfect mix of nostalgia, live music, and humour. It’s a unique blend of heartfelt storytelling, stellar performances, and holiday fun. Audiences leave feeling connected, uplifted, and ready to embrace the season—it’s no wonder it’s become a holiday tradition for so many,” explained Carroll.
This is definitely the show for theatregoers who want to leave the theatre with that “Christmas feeling”, and Carroll said it captures the joy, warmth and togetherness of the festive season.
“With its spectacular music, touching stories, and lively performances, audiences leave with their hearts full and their spirits high, ready to celebrate the holidays. And to top it all off, we end with one of the most incredible Australian Christmas carol mega-mixes I’ve ever heard—it’s pure magic!”
Christmas Actually is the perfect Christmas night out for everyone. “Whether you’re a fan of Love Actually, a music lover, or just looking for a festive night out, Christmas Actually delivers. It’s ideal for couples, friends, and families (recommended for ages 13+).”
Carroll is adamant that Christmas Actually is more than just a show, it’s an experience that brings people together to celebrate love in all its forms.
“This production is a gift of unashamed entertainment and escapism, and we’re incredibly proud of its impact. Whether you’re laughing at the comedy or tearing up during a heartfelt moment, we promise you’ll leave with memories that last long after the curtain falls. Don’t miss it!”
