CANARY

They are the rainbow-hued songbirds of the bird world. They also boldly go where no other bird – or human – dare to, and often they suffer the consequences. The analogy is clear in this play by acclaimed  UK playwright Jonathan Harvey (Beautiful Thing), following in the thematic footsteps of gay activist Peter Tatchell who famously said, “We’re the litmus test of whether a society respects human rights. We’re the canaries in the mine.” Spanning five decades and a spectrum of complex scenes (including a Gay Liberation Front recreation and a magic-realist meeting with a priest), this is a worth inclusion on your Mardi Gras calendar.
