BELONG & ID

BELONG & ID

It’s said that the Inuit people have over 100 words for ‘snow.’ This elemental part of their culture requires a myriad of different words to describe each shade, each texture and each tone.

Similarly in the Torres Strait there are four words to describe the different types of wind – each ascribed its own personality. In Bangarra Dance Theatre’s latest production, Belong, choreographer Elma Kris affectionately brings each character to life. Emerging from the fog, dancer’s movements mirror the different winds – From the tropical storms or ‘Kuki,’ portrayed as in tattered black costumes, to ‘Nagay,’ the most gentle, with its silver and gold shimmer.

In ID, the company’s Artistic Director Stephen Page explores Indigenous identity in the 21st century. A large screen centre-stage projects a pre-recorded film sequence where the dancers stare outwardly as if in a slow-motion portrait. Perched in a frame, they force us to confront our pre-conceived notions of Aboriginal identity. Stephen’s brother David mixes electro with traditional sounds to create an immersive soundscape. As the dancers slip to the edge of the screen and escape the confines of their frame, they appear onstage, and their energetic performances present the spectrum of indigenous experience. A thoughtful and moving reflection of Indigenous culture today.
