Asylum

Bertolt Brecht said, “Art is not a mirror held up to reality but a hammer with which to shape it.” Running with this notion Sydney’s Apocalypse Theatre have assembled playwrights from across the country to address the ever-growing social and political issue of asylum seekers.

According to Dino Dimitriadis, the Artistic Director of Apocalypse Theatre, “The Australian government’s refugee policies continue to be a divisive aspect of the country’s national identity, inciting passionate debate over their political and ethical legitimacy but what the theatre provides is a genuinely unique environment for the public, or at least a public, to gather together and actively think through the confronting questions this issue raises.”

Over 20 playwrights have come together to produce and preform 25 diverse works ranging from documentary to magical realism. Refuges have also been included in the writing effort, which will be sure to produce an authentic and challenging experience.
All involved are working as volunteers so as to ensure proceeds are donated to the Asylum Seeker Center in Sydney and the Asylum Seeker Resource Center in Melbourne. (BM)
