ANNIE

This production of the classic all American musical Annie is fresh, vibrant and uplifting.

At a time when kids are more concerned with Facebook, texting and reality TV, it’s really quite amazing that a musical about a little orphan girl who lived during the 1930s Depression can still pull massive crowds and get kids into live theatre.

Interestingly, the story hasn’t weathered with age, in fact if anything the discussion around the Depression and, “getting people back to work” is not too far from what is currently being played out in the political rhetoric of the world over – which gives the show some new relevance.

The score sparkles under Peter Casey’s direction and provides the perfect vehicle to advance the story effortlessly. Anthony Warlow as Daddy Warbucks is fantastic, with a voice handed to him from heaven. The children are energetic and a delight to watch. Julie Goodwin as Warbuck’s assistant Grace is just simply lovely and Karen Johnson Mortimer’s direction is tight, clear and captivating – quite a challenge given Annie has been produced many times over since it debuted in 1976.

Annie is a show for big and little kids alike, full of hope and optimism. Be prepared to leave unable to stop humming its theme song,Tomorrow.
