Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was the first musical written by powerhouse collaborators, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be put on stage. That was more than 50 years ago, and it has continued to be performed somewhere in the world ever since.

This revival was a smash hit in London where it sold out two seasons. It has always been a favourite with Australian audiences, with its simple narrative and singable tunes including including “Close Every Door To Me”, “Any Dream Will Do”, and “Go Go Go Joseph”.

The book is based on a story from the Old Testament. (Sensing they were on a good thing, Rice and LLoyd Webber turned to the New Testament for their follow up work.)

Joseph is the favoured son of Jacob, much to the chagrin of his eleven brothers whose jealousy leads them to sell Joseph as a slave. After spurning the advances of his master’s wife, Joseph gets tossed into jail where he suddenly discovers he has an uncanny ability to interpret dreams. This brings him to the attention of the dream-plagued Pharoah and Joseph’s fortunes take a positive turn.
