A LITTLE ROOM

A LITTLE ROOM

A Little Room tells the story of three women named Miss Place, Lana and Betty, all with different pasts and backgrounds who meet in a bar in the Blue Mountains. The show’s writer/creator/performer, Michelle St Anne, was inspired by Canadian sound designer, Jane Cardiff, and audiences can expect a delicate layer of light, sound and image. Four years ago it began as a radio play. “I wanted to adapt it because I love imagery,” she tells me, “but I had to try and keep it aural so it sounds part radio. It’s about a new way of listening and the communal listening in the theatre. Visual artists, architects and musicians are also going to love it.” St Anne describes this performance as a tragic love story with private moments illuminated. A central theme is about people’s private grieving processes and the importance of finding stillness in it. “It’s a very moving and beautiful play and I explore the language of poetry. My work is usually dark but there are moments of both comfort and silliness.”
