A HISTORY OF EVERYTHING

A HISTORY OF EVERYTHING

A History of Everything is a Sydney Festival collaboration between STC’s The Residents and Belgian Theatre group, Ontroerend Goed. The piece fuses science and the arts to take the audience on a journey through the history of the universe.

“We are who we are because of memories,” says writer and director Alexander Devriendt. “But when memories disappear what makes the past into who I am now? Some beliefs I have come from history. So it’s really a way of looking at human thinking and the human perspective on science and history.”

The piece takes inspiration from selected scientists as well as current events and the personal memories of the cast to shape the structure.

“The beautiful thing is that those writers, Dawkins and Greene and Jerad Diamond, they gave me in essence … how you look at history and how you deal with it,” says Devriendt.

Each day, the play begins afresh, taking into account that day’s events and going backwards.

The audience is then taken on a roller-coaster ride through moments big and small in a piece that aims to capture the scale of our existence.
