Internationally acclaimed Australian illusionist Michael Boyd has travelled the world mystifying audiences with his intriguing illusion and magical spectaculars, and now he comes to Sydney to present his exciting new show Mystique – A Journey Beyond Reality.

Born in Melbourne, Boyd was introduced to the world of magic at a young age by his grandfather which may be a pivotal reason why he has transformed his love for magic into a successful career.

“I’ve always been fascinated by magic—like most kids are—but everything changed when I discovered my grandfather had been a touring magician in the 1930s. From that moment, he became my hero. Every weekend, I’d visit him, and he’d have a new trick to show me. He taught me the craft, but I truly believe magic is in my blood,” he explained.

Boyd appeared on Australia’s Got Talent and reached finalist status owing to his incredible performance which left the judges and viewers at home stunned.

“It definitely opened many doors—an incredible experience with priceless exposure. It’s also given me a great tagline, and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity.”

Mystique is a show that should mystify audiences with astonishing acts of magic and illusions. Audiences can expect to see amazing escapes, transformations, inexplicable disappearances and levitations.

“Mystique weaves a thread of storytelling through the world of dreams—my dreams, your dreams, and the dreaded nightmares. It’s a journey beyond imagination. Expect the unexpected and the unexplainable. With grand illusions, intimate sleight of hand, and interactive magic, this is a show the whole family will love,” enthused Boyd.

The mood of the show is upbeat and fun, but he explained that with magic there are many layers.

“We take the audience on a magical roller-coaster—through beautiful moments, whimsical touches, and edge-of-your-seat thrills. It’s an experience that surprises at every turn.”

Each act will astound, but the highlight is the scorpion illusion which should have audiences at the edge of their seats. Crafted by the same talented team behind David Copperfield this is a $50,000 robotic mechanism.

“The Scorpion Illusion appears in the Nightmare section of the show and features a massive 2-metre buzz saw blade— the deadly tail of the scorpion—swinging toward a sealed box as I attempt to escape its lethal sting.”

The Double Levitation Illusion which has never been seen in Sydney is also part of the show. A dancer rises to dizzying heights as Boyd flies across the State Theatre in a Peter Pan-style flight, defying gravity – a heart stopping and spectacular illusion.

Boyd is joined on stage by several stunning ex-Moulin Rouge showgirls who he says bring elegance, beauty and glamour to each and every illusion on stage.

When asked what he enjoys most about being an illusionist Boyd was quick to respond.

“The best part of my job is witnessing the reactions—when kids turn to their parents and ask, ‘How did they do that?’ and the parents, just as amazed, say, ‘I don’t know.’ Magic is one of the few art forms that truly ignites a sense of wonder, and I absolutely love watching that wonder light up their faces.”

Boyd concluded by saying that Mystique is true good old-fashioned family entertainment offering something for everyone.

“One of my favourite moments is meeting the audience during the post-show meet and greet—seeing such a diverse mix of people: couples, families, young and old, and everything in between. Magic breaks all barriers—of age, background, and language—because it speaks in its own visual and universal way.”
