1001 Remarkable Objects in one remarkable book

The Powerhouse Museum has announced the publication of a stunning book, 1001 Remarkable Objects, a companion to the incredible exhibtion of the same name This publication celebrates the scale, breadth, and relevance of the various decorative arts and design collections held by the museum.

The 1001 Remarkable Objects curatorium is led by Leo Schofield AM, with curators Eva Czernis-Ryl, Ronan Sulich, Mark Sutcliffe, and Chloe Appleby; their vision for the various collections will be reflected in the publication.

A series of 32 still life images will open the publication. These images are produced by photographer Lauren Bamford in collaboration with stylist and art director Sarah Pritchard. All documentary photographs and object captions are paired alongside 15 narratives.

The works from the four curators will be accompanied by 11 Powerhouse commissioned Australian authors. These authors were provided an opportunity to respond to a series of remarkable objects that resonate with their individual writing styles. The resulting texts will cover a range of genres such as hip hop, memoir, fiction, and historiography. The featured authors include DOBBY (Rhyan Clapham), Leo Schofield AM, Sheila Ngoc, Omar Musa, and many more.

The authors drew inspiration from various objects when producing their stories. The objects include: a photograph titled “Aboriginal fisheries, Darling River”, that is over 100 years old, an Italian lace panel from the mid 1600s, a pair of Japanese okimono monkeys, and one of the first string instruments manufactured in colonial Australia.

The Powerhouse Collection holds more than half a million objects of national and international significance. A broad spectrum of objects featured in 1001 range from jewellery, fashion, and textiles, to furniture, clocks, musical instruments, and industrial design.

There are 1000 copies of the publication currently available for pre-order. The 1001 Remarkable Objects book will then be available online and in-store at the Powerhouse Shop from 8 December, 2023.
