Welcome to the Spice Age – The Old Spice Boys

By Chris Peken

Five strings, one drum kit, three people. The Old Spice Boys are an age old bad pun and a timeless sense of adventure and enjoyment in one all-too complicated bundle. The complications related to ten years together with a tea-chest bass player, a world aclaimed ukulele player and a drummer, touring in small confined spaces, and addictive personalities. The fun and adventure relates to the musical combination of the above along with joys of exploring swing, jazz, pop, waltz, classical and more with limited instrumentation and unlimited imagination. Thier take on The Message makes Grand Master Flash sound like Austen Tashus while I’m Going Back Up in the Hills to Grow My Beard gives away their Byron Bay origins. What they have done to The Who’s My Generation defies description but my therapist assures me it’s all harmless fun. From Monterey to Murwillumbah, The Old Spice Boys make as much sense as anything else in the world.
