VIBRATION

VIBRATION

Vibration – Latin American Kinetic Art of the 1960s and ‘70 – is an exhibition where as you look into the concentric circles of Cercles Chromatiques it changes colours sporadically and periodically like an old television set.  The wooden box of Labyrinthe Diagonale with crisscrossing reflective metal sheets appears to be like light bouncing off a surface of water when looked at from a distance.

After two rounds of the gallery the further you stand the more interesting things look.  You stand alongside a work with head against the wall and realise only the back of those cubes are coloured.  You stand afar and then move in close.  Through optical illusions and kinetic effects, artists from Brazil; Venezuela; and Argentina turn observer into participant.

Until Sep 14, University Art Gallery, University of Sydney, northern entrance of the Quadrangle, free, 9351 6883, sydney.edu.au/museums
