Sydney Underground Film Festival

Sydney Underground Film Festival

The Sydney Underground Film Festival is an alternate and innovative film festival screening the most controversial, subversive, and experimental films in the world that can aptly be categorized as a ‘diverse program of weirdo films”.

An analysis of the program with strangely titled films such as Pig Killer, Sick Of Myself and Pub: The Movie would initially suggest that this festival is intended for university students, but its appeal is more widespread. Festival enthusiasts feeling adventurous and who want to excite and violate their senses should come along and enjoy the bizarre, innovative and boundary pushing films this festival has on offer.

This is the festival’s 16th presentation in Sydney and the films screened are suitable for young and young at heart. Statistically, there is always a strong contingent of the older generation – the baby boomers who enjoy these films.

“It’s exciting to announce that the annual SUFF pilgrimage is back! There has never been a better time to come and discover new films alongside like-minded people,” enthused Katherine Berger, Festival Director.

The opening night event includes the screening of I Love My Dad, the story of a man who desperately attempts to reconnect with his son. Drinks and Canapes are included in what promises to be an exciting opening night extravaganza.

For an absurdist yet oddly delightful comedy at its ‘batshit weirdest’, audiences need go no further than the low budget independent film The Lonely Spirits Variety Hour, which tells the story of a wannabe late night radio announcer who has an eccentric group of guests on his program – but what are the tragic truths about to be revealed?

This is the first time in 3 years since the pandemic caused worldwide restrictions and shutdowns that this festival is being held in-house. But there is also a select program of films that moviegoers can choose to watch online.

The Underground Film Festival is adventurous, safe, fun and for the first time in its 16 years history has moved to a new location at the Event George St Cinemas with its very own festival hub.

“We’re proud to platform the immense talents of independent and alternative filmmakers from Australia and around the world, and we have a ton of quality hilarious, offbeat and horrific films not be missed on the big screen this September,” concluded Berger.

HOT PICKS

ALL JACKED UP AND FULL OF WORMSFor the sickest and most twisted film of sex and violence audiences won’t be disappointed in this fractured, wriggling, drug induced, creature feature nightmare starring a cast of hallucinogenic worms! Not for the faint-hearted!

SWALLOWEDThis is the queer story centering on a couple who become drug mules. Enticed to swallow little bags of drugs and smuggle them over the Canadian border, they ultimately come to the realisation that it was not such a good idea. An unsettling creepy-crawly indulgence!

PUSSYCAKE A ‘bloodied love-letter’ to the horror flicks of the 80s. There are monsters, hit songs and plenty of gore that should sicken the most hardened lovers of those ‘almost anything goes, blood-curdling flicks!’
