Detectives from the NSW Police Organised Crime Squad have arrested and charged two men in a massive drug bust after they attempted to smuggle $20 million worth of meth (methylamphetamine) in tea packets.
The arrests were made as part of Strike Force Canovellas, which was established to investigate the spread of meth across Sydney.
Police executed a search warrant in Greenacre at about 10:50am on Thursday January 2nd, 2025, where they found two men weighing packages of methylamphetamine that were rather creatively disguised as tea.
The pair, aged 49 and 56, were promptly arrested at the scene, taken to Bankstown Police Station and subsequently charged with holding the supply of a prohibited drug in a large commercial quantity, as well as participating in a criminal group. Both men were refused bail and appeared yesterday (Friday January 3) in Parramatta Local Court to start their case.
Detectives from the Organised Crime Squad have been working with the Drug Enforcement Administration and Thai authorities to investigate where the drugs came from.
It’s not the first drug bust by the NSW Police Force in recent months with a more… creative slant from the people trafficking the drugs. In November 2024, a 21 year old man living in Matraville was arrested after the Police seized 252kg of ‘pink cocaine’ that was branded with the iconic visage of the Pink Panther.
The bust also follows the first NSW Drug Summit in 25 years last month (December 2024), where many experts and groups called for the state government to implement a whole-of-government drug and alcohol strategy. Many also urged the government to scale back police presence for those charged with minor drug possessions, highlighting the poor usage of detection dogs, unlawful searches and coercive questions.
Nonetheless, investigations as part of Strike Force Canovellas are ongoing as police attempt to source where the methylamphetamine is coming from on the streets of Sydney.
