TORERO

For lovers of dance and hybrid culture, this new double bill of Spanish dance promises to excite.

Presented by Chatswood’s Flamencology Dance Studio who are dedicated to teaching the art of Flamenco dance, as practiced in Spain.

The night is presented in two halves. The first is a performance, of ‘Fiesta’ flamenco, a more traditional dance featuring the sounds of the castanets, and the rhythms of the feet.

Following is the presentation of Torero, a theatrical drama. Torero is the story of “the Matador and his family, the uncertainty the family goes through, the ritual of the bullfight, and the bull and his fight for life,” artistic director Katia Ruiz explains.

An intense dance, it begins on the morning of the bullfight as the Matador prepares by going to the alter and seeking remorse for the life of the bull.

Originating in the south of Spain flamenco was originally a Gypsy dance.

“It was an expression of what they wanted to achieve in life,” Ruiz explains.

While Flamenco may conjure images of a romantic interlude, despite the preconceptions, “It’s really a dance based on pride and emotion… It’s a performance level dance,” Ruiz says.

For those considering learning, it takes commitment, dedication, and discipline not unlike any other art form. (VP)
