THEATRE: LOVE SONG

THEATRE: LOVE SONG

I may be a little traditional when it comes to these things, but from a play titled Love Song, I would not typically expect acts of theft by extremists, and a few carefully placed references to faeces. But the beauty of this production lies in its surprises.
The plot focuses on Beane, a curious and peculiar creature who says very little, and tends to observe the world without comprehending it. His sister, Joan, and her husband, Harry, attempt to care for him as best as they can, but are too busy with their own lives and barely have time for each other.

When Beane is robbed of everything he owns, however, he falls in love with the thief, and his joy and passion expands exponentially. Beane’s new enthusiasm for life proves irresistable, and soon Joan and Harry are caught up in this mood of vibrant enthusiasm.
As irresponsible joy spreads through the cast, the audience finds themselves swept away also. People shift forward in their seats, squirm around and laugh loudly. Well-paced performances, particularly from Di Smith (Joan) and Drayton Morley (Harry), and simple but perfectly executed set, sound and lighting design make this production an exceptional pleasure.
