THEATRE: BOUNCERS

Live theatre returns to the Cat and Fiddle with Insomniac Theatre’s new production of Bouncers. John Godber’s classic comedy is the perfect choice for a venue that hasn’t hosted theatre since the close of the downstairs Crypt. It’s a rowdy ensemble piece about a messy Friday night on the tiles.

Director Maggie Scott says, “It’s a story everyone recognises: getting ready to go out, having a few drinks in the pub, trying to get into a club, maybe getting in, maybe not. Then as the night goes on, trying to find someone to take home, increasingly drunk and desperate. We’ve all been there!”

The play features only four actors, but between them they play a total of thirty roles – male and female. They start off as bouncers at a Yorkshire hotel, but during the play they inhabit the characters of all the people they come across in a night’s work. Monkey-suited bouncers sing, dance, rap and throw down pints in a performance that moves from beauty salon to pub to disco and home, with nothing more than a pair of sunglasses and a handbag for props

Godber wrote it in 1977 “as a way of showing my non-theatre mates that theatre could be cool”. Since then it has become one of the most performed plays in the UK, and a favourite with audiences. It’s funny, clever, astonishingly well-acted, and a great way to kick off a night at the pub.
