History Week was created by the History Council of NSW to showcase the rich and diverse history being produced by individuals and organisations across the state and will celebrate significant Sydney artists through images presented in Picture This at On Seven David Jones.

This dynamic exhibition will be housed in a ‘pop-up’ version of Martin Sharp’s artist collective – The Yellow House – which became a piece of living art and a mecca to pop artists in the 70s. Sharp made tremendous contributions to the field of Australian and international art and is the “acknowledged King of the UK poster scene in the 60s”.

At the Yellow House Pop-Up Gallery acclaimed Australian artists will pay tribute to muses past. Archibald Prize winner Wendy Sharpe pays homage to Australian cabaret artist Tracey Lee – arguably Sydney’s first female impersonator. Jane Gillings evokes the exuberance of the 20s, inspired by the “Queen of Bohemia”, Dulcie Deamer. Leo Rabba’s inspiration is drawn from photojournalist Samuel Hoods, who began his career in photography in the 1880s. People’s Choice Archibald Prize winner Jenny Sage will channel Florence Broadhurst, the famous Australian designer and businesswoman whose 1977 murder remains a mystery to this day.

Last but by no means least – Reg Mombassa’s painting of an embattled Luna Park draws on Martin Sharp’s lasting influence on the Sydney art scene. Bring your paintbrush to this installation, as in true Yellow House style, no-one enters without leaving their mark. (SC)
