The Program

Sport has an uncanny way of producing both heroes and villains. It’s not often however that the same person can fulfil both roles––however in the case of Lance Armstrong, that is just the scenario that the world saw play out between 1999 and 2013.

This time period is the primary focus of Stephen Frears The Program, which is inspired by journalist David Walsh’s book Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit Of Lance Armstrong. With the film being based on the journalist’s recount of the story, it follows a documentary style format.

Ben Foster’s portrayal of Armstrong is uncanny and cannot receive enough praise. Another key figure in the ultimate downfall was Floyd Landis who is played by Jessie Plemons, who also puts in a supreme performance.

The biggest problem with the film is that it covers such a long time period it can sometimes feel rushed and as though it is only skimming the surface, this is even more pronounced for an avid cycling fan who followed this story intently from the moment rumblings began. If you are a casual fan however this film is certainly worth checking out. (JA)
