THE LAST FIVE YEARS

THE LAST FIVE YEARS

The Last Five Years is a one-act musical that explores the rise and fall of a five-year relationship between struggling actress Cathy Hyatt (played by Marika Aubrey) and emerging novelist Jamie Wellerstein (played by Rob Mills). Written by Tony award-winning US composer Jason Robert Brown, this show cleverly manipulates time. The audience is shown both points of view with Cathy’s storytelling beginning at the end of their marriage and following in reverse chronological order whereas Jason’s journey begins when the couple first met and follows the chronological order of the events of their relationship. The director of this production is Luke Rogers whose credits include theatre manager at New Theatre and theatre curator for Sydney Fringe Festival. The Last Five Years has been described as, “raw, enchanting and bittersweet” and this modern-day romance first premiered in Chicago in 2001. Since then it has been met with worldwide success. (ES)
