Cajun Dance Party – The Colourful Life

The Colourful Life – Cajun Dance Party

By Chris Peken

One of my favourite Sci-Fi plots involves the sucking of life from the youth to sustain the decrepit and the dying; the adaptation of the Dorian Grey senario that involves the draining of youthful effervescence, the taking of that joy de vie, the stealing of energy and inventiveness that inevitably dissipates post 21. If I were a rock/pop dinosaur wondering where my next half-decent melody or riff was coming from, I’d have my fangs sharpened and head for North London, in the direction of Cajun Dance Party. Beginning life in the all-ages venues due to their tender years, and still all in their late-teens, Cajun Dance Party’s debut single The Next Untouchable caused a near stampede of A&R people. Recommended by Thom Yorke and part-produced by Suede’s Bernard Butler has only furthered the expectations that The Colourful Life goes a long way towards fulfilling. Said single still stands out as a soaring, raucous stomper crashing through in a manner not unlike Block Party did two years ago. The Radiohead comparisons are less obvious, due more to singer Daniel Blumberg’s occasional affectations more than anything else. With a raft of classically-trained multi-instrumentalists on board Cajun Dance Party do not lack for the ability to surprise in terms of direction and the songs show maturity of arrangement while remaining damned-ably catchy.
