THE ADDAMS FAMILY

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky and everyone knows the Addams family. That’s what makes creating a Broadway musical about them such a difficult task. Jersey Boys co-writers, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice along with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, have taken on the task and succeeded inviting the world into theirs.

The Capitol Theatre is home to the gloriously gloomy family for the duration and this time Wednesday is all grown up and in love. The story focuses on her budding romance with a ‘normal’ boy, the effect it has on the relationship between Morticia (Chloe Dallimore) and Gomez (John Waters) and her place in the Addams family.

Despite the bulk of the story being about Wednesday (Teagan Wouters), the standout performances come from Uncle Fester (Russell Dykstra) and potential mother-in-law Alice Beineke (Katrina Retallick) who provide outrageous comic relief from the sometimes slow-moving plotline.

Inventive (and some might say old-school) set designs cleverly tackle the challenges presented by staging Thing, Cousin It and other quirky aspects that the Addams are famous for. Click, click. (LL)
