When you think of summer in Australia, spending time outdoors and attending sun filled events is something extremely appealing. In Sydney over the summer season we see an increase in outdoor  celebrations, sporting events, festivals, parades, and concerts.

The opening of the new Allianz Stadium in the heart of Sydney’s city, will bring a range of music concerts and sports matches over the summer months.

Carols in the Domain and Field Day Festival celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Day respectively, and bring a swarm of crowds to The Domain. The annual Boxing Day test match at the SCG repeatedly brings tens of thousands of cricket fans to the well-known cricket ground. This summer season marks the first since pre-covid where all restrictions have been relaxed, so celebrations are sure to be huge.

Outdoor events bring together large crowds, so planning is extremely important.

Permits are required by relevant councils. There needs to be a plan for crowd control, amenities like food and drink, medical facilities, and toilets, as well as reliable and adequate power supply. The safety of attendees is paramount and organisers need to anticipate possibilities such as crowd crushes, tripping hazards, aggression or drunkeness, among other things.

Weather, of course, is one thing that can’t be predicted, but contingency should be in place for any conditions: extreme heat, extreme cold, heavy rain or storms, high winds.

Outdoor events are extremely popular in Sydney as it’s a part of Australian culture to spend time outdoors participating in various activities in the glorious weather. To ensure these events run smoothy, it’s important to implement planning to cover crowd management and the safety of the community.
