Sydney Club The Argyle Shuts Its Doors After 17 Years
The Argyle, an icon of Sydney nightlife, has announced its closure, sparking fresh concerns about the city’s dwindling nightlife scene.
After 17 years of success, the beloved venue in The Rocks will be shutting its doors.
Known for hosting major events and attracting partygoers from across the city, The Argyle has been a cornerstone of Sydney’s nightlife, drawing in music lovers for almost two decades.
The club’s management took to Instagram to share the news, writing it was “time to say goodbye”.
“For nearly TWO DECADES, we’ve been the backdrop to some of Sydney’s biggest and most EPIC nights. From local legends to multi-platinum international artists, we’ve partied with the best, and none of it would’ve been possible without YOU!” The Argyle posted on Wednesday.
Despite the sad news of its closure, the club announced a series of farewell events to celebrate its last chapter.
The Argyle’s Last Hurrah
“We’ve stacked the calendar with some MAMMOTH events as part of our Closing Series, and it all kicks off THIS weekend with Havana Brown. We’re turning it UP for our FINAL WEEKS, with your favourite themed parties (you know we LOVE a good themed party!) and killer headline DJs!” the beloved Sydney venue announced.
“ARGYLIANS ASSEMBLE! It’s time to round up the crew, as we build up to our FINAL send off, for our legendary NEW YEAR’S EVE party! Welcome to the FINAL chapter of The Argyle,” their team said.
The closure of The Argyle is a significant change brought in under hospitality giants Hunter St. Hospitality and Pacific Concepts as part of a broader shift under the leadership of newly appointed CEO Frank Tucker.
Tucker’s strategy is centred on shifting focus towards high-end restaurants rather than nightclubs, particularly in the Circular Quay area, which attracts significant tourist traffic.
“The 20- to 23-year-olds have been good to us,” Tucker told The Sydney Morning Herald earlier this year.
The Argyle bar and nightclub at The Rocks will close in January, making way for a premium restaurant to take its place.
His vision for the new, yet-to-be-named restaurant, set to open next year, is to transform it into a key development for the surrounding Argyle Stores precinct.
Many commenters expressed their disappointment over The Argyle’s closure.
One person wrote, “So many incredible memories, such devastating news”, while another wrote, “OMG!!!!! You have been my home place for all my Halloween costumes!!! Thank you for all the memories we have shared together.”
