Still feel harmonious after 100 years
The Sydney Philharmonia Choirs will perform Handel’s Messiah at the Sydney Opera House a full century after the first time they performed the monumental work back in December 1922.
It will be a doubly special occasion as they will be performing for the first time in the Concert Hall since its refurbishment.
Handel’s famous oratorio is a popular program selection for Christmas concerts, even though the libretto focuses more on the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and much more suitable for Easter. The stirring Hallelujah chorus never fails to raise goosebumps, nor raise people to their feet in what has become a quirky tradition.
There is nothing quite like hearing the Messiah performed live with a full choir, and Sydney Philharmonia Choirs is among the finest.
Each year Sydney Philharmonia Choirs invites members of the community to join its Christmas Choir. It’s a unique opportunity to perform with auditioned singers, a professional orchestra, and world-renowned soloists on a world-class concert stage.
A new partnership with Wollongong Conservatorium of Music in 2022 has seen this Christmas Choir swell to over 480 singers from across Sydney and the Illawarra. Add Sydney Philharmonia’s own auditioned choirs to the mix, and special guest partners, Parramatta’s River City Voices, and an awe-inspiring choral force of almost 700 singers will give voice to Messiah’s choruses.
