Singapore Airlines Is First International Airline To Book Western Sydney International Airport Berth
Singapore Airlines is the first international airline to announce that it will operate out of the upcoming Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) – Sydney’s first 24-hour international airport. The airline will connect future passengers to one of Asia’s largest transportation hubs.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Transport Minister Catherine King, announced the deal at a press conference on Tuesday, August 27.
“By having Singapore Airlines as the first international airline to commit from overseas to use this airport, what it will do is give direct access into all those markets Singapore Airlines flies to in that wonderful hub that is there at Changi Airport,” the Prime Minister said.
King went on to confirm that discussions with Turkish Airlines and Vietnam Airlines were also underway. Sri Lanka, Samoa, and Tonga, have also been in bilateral air service negotiations with Australia in the past 12 months.
Qantas and its budget airline Jetstar have also agreed to operate domestic flights out of WSIA.
Vote Of Confidence
WSIA said that the announcement was a huge “vote of confidence” in the airport that is expected to open in late 2026.
A Hopeful Boom for Local Business
Business Western Sydney Executive Director, David Borger, congratulated the WSIA team on securing its win.
“The business community extends our congratulations to the WSIA team for securing its first overseas airline partner.”
Borger went on to state how the deal would continue to bolster local business opportunities for Western Sydney.
“Singapore Airlines is a globally renowned brand known for its excellence in air travel. Its presence in Western Sydney not only enhances our connectivity with major international markets, especially in Asia but also unlocks immense opportunities for trade and local job creation, thanks to the operational demands of a 24/7 airport.”
Around 10 million passengers are anticipated to utilise the facilities with the capacity to grow to 80 million passengers by 2060.
