SIDE EFFECTS

SIDE EFFECTS

Side Effects, from Director Steven Soderbergh, is an unsettling psychological thriller that examines the accountability of a crime committed under the influence of anti-depressants.

Shortly following the release of her husband from gaol, Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara) intentionally drives into a carpark wall. Questioned by psychiatrist Dr Jonathan Banks (Jude Law), she convincingly argues that she made a mistake, and needs to get back to her husband Martin (Channing Tatum). Dr Banks agrees, on the proviso that Emily sees him for counselling.

Thus begins a tale that will have you triple guessing most characters, especially the one played by a brilliantly suspicious Jude Law.  Side Effects is a cleverly-plotted whodunit that will make you question your next visit to the quack. (KM) ****
