One man is dead and another is in hospital in critical condition after a Sunday night shooting at an Inner West pub.

Emergency services were called to The Harold Hotel in Forest Lodge on Sunday night after there were reports of gunshot around 6:40pm.

Police allege that two people had been shot multiple times by unknown assailants as they were making their way to their car after spending the afternoon watching the UFC at the pub.

Maradona Yalda, 31, was seriously injured in the shooting while his associate Gilbert Shino, 39, died from multiple gunshot wounds at the scene of the incident.

Yalda was shot in the neck, neck, and abdomen, and was treated by first responders and medical students who were in the pub at the time, before being transport to Royal Price Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

Yalda allegedly has links to Assyrian organised crime group based in Sydney’s west, DLASTHR, also called ‘The Last Hour’, and is known to authorities for a range of alleged offending tied to the groups.

Premier says shooting was “deplorable”

In a press conference on Monday, Det Supt Alfio Sergi of the Leichhardt Police Area Command said “numerous” shots were fired outside pub, describing one “whizzing by” a staff member picking up glasses outside.

Sergi said he believed the situation, which he described as “brazen” and “callous” was a “targeted attack”.

“Obviously we’ll be looking at [any] links with organised crime networks, that will be a focus of our investigation,” he said.

Speaking to media on Monday morning, NSW Premier Chris Minns said the incident was a “horrifying, violent criminal act”.

“It’s deplorable, it’s disgusting, it’s the kind of thing that you don’t expect to see in a reasonably safe city like Sydney,” he said.

“We can’t promise an end to this despicable and horrific violence. We can promise a comprehensive police response, and NSW Police have locked up and put in jail for decades the people who are responsible for these violent public gangland crimes.”

The hotel closed for the remainder of the night, with parts of Wigram Road and Ross Street blocked up to Monday morning.

Police have established a crime scene, and Leichhardt detectives, with assistance from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, have opened an investigation.
