Sculpture By The Sea 2017

Over two and a half weeks Sculpture By The Sea will occupy the iconic Sydney coastline from Bondi to Tamarama.
This year will mark the 21st birthday of the exhibition and with over 100 Australian and international artists showcasing their works the spectacular display is expected to attract over 500,000 visitors throughout the display.
One of the many entrants in the exhibition is Marina DeBris, featuring her Inconvenience Store, that will be filled with trash that she has collected from local beaches over the past two years. The store is very tongue in cheek and humorous but depicts a serious topic. It will be built by sustainable builders Verticon, using salvaged materials.
“In 2013 for Sculpture By The Sea, I built a giant aquarium and named it the Aquarium of the Pacific Gyre and I sat around the piece quite a bit, no one knew I was the artist but it was great to sit and listen to the reactions. Everyone understood what it was about and if nothing else it really started a great dialog. I’m hoping this year to get the same reaction”
Moving from Bondi, Marina started her mission in the west side of LA picking up the rubbish which had been left or washed up on the beaches.
When asked about the rubbish problem in Australia, Marina replied, “It’s quiet shocking, LA has a huge population and per capita it was saddening that the problem is as bad here, though it is a worldwide problem that has a lot to do with waste management”
