Prepare for the daring and satirical comedy, Loot, coming to New Theatre this October.

Originally written by Joe Orton, the play follows couple Hal and Dennis following a bank heist and finding a place to hide the cash. With Hal’s mother recently deceased, they decided her coffin would be the best place to stash it. However, with investigators hot on their trail, the couple have to enlist for help to keep their cash and secrets clean.

This clever story on the social perceptions of death and the power of the police, will be directed by the renowned Johann Walraven in this upcoming production. In anticipation to be a part of a Loot production once again, Walraven explains their personal connection to Orton’s story.

“I am thrilled to direct Loot, two decades after playing ‘Hal’ myself at [National Institute of Dramatic Art], directed by Terry Clarke. I fell in love with the piece then, and love it even more so now,” says Walraven.

“Orton’s writing is so sharp, almost too much so, as you are laughing at one joke whilst another is being uttered. You almost have to stifle yourself to catch it all. But it’s not all puns and witticisms; his barbs cut to the core of social issues 50 years ago, and those issues are still prevalent today,” Walraven continues.

The production is helmed by an accredited cast and crew, set to bring this witty story to life.
