SANDFLY FILM FESTIVAL

SANDFLY FILM FESTIVAL

An independent film festival that has its roots in Jervis Bay and its mind on the international arena, opens in Newtown on Saturday.

Currently in its fourth year of operation, the Sandfly Film Festival was started by husband and wife team Ulysses Oliver and CC Williams. The Sydney events also feature live music, food and booze, and are a grass-roots showcase of Australian and overseas films.

“We wanted to find films with integrity and film-making intent behind them, rather than just gimics,” says Williams. This is the first year they’re also running international screenings in Los Angeles, New York, Berlin and Bogota, along with local screenings in Newtown, Chippendale, Jervis Bay and the Blue Mountains.

Highlights include Aquel No Era Yo (It Wasn’t Me), an African-Spanish co-production about child soldiers in Africa, and french animation film Mr Hublot. (LG)
