PUB PLAYS

Once a month, between now and Christmas, some of Sydney’s finest actors and directors will descend on The Old Fitz – one of the few ‘character pubs’ left in Sydney – for Pub Plays.

This intriguing new series of script-in-hand readings will bring back to life a hand-picked batch of Australia’s most important and iconic plays, some of which haven’t seen the light of day for decades.

The original reading event, TRS & Iron Bark, firstly found its niche in the London where over the past five years managed to find a dedicated fan base, selling out most nights it was staged.

Now, John Kackoyan, co-director of the event, has brought it back to his native land and is excited about the prospect of unleashing some of Australian’s finest plays to theSydneypublic.

“We realised that there were a lot of fantastic old plays that probably haven’t been read in this way in 30 years. We have some great actors on board and it’s going to be a very relaxed atmosphere,” he said.

“This is a chance to stage a revival of some forgotten Australian plays, scripts from 1940s and 1950s, some which were basically neglected classics, which won awards at the time.”

Kachoyan is directing the first reading, Flood by Eunice Hanger.

“It’s a really interesting play and brings to light that a lot of our finest playwrights were women.” (AJ)
