The Museum of Contemporary Arts (MCA) has officially revealed a list of the artists who will be featured at the 31st edition of their annual exhibition: Primavera 2022: Young Australian Artists. Artists such as Sundari Carmody, Angela Goh, Julia Gutman, Armita Hepi, Jazz Money and Katie West will be exhibiting work that ranges from moving images to choreography. The aim is to allow visitors to focus on the present moment and answer questions around the what, how, who and why of now.

Sundari Carmody, an artist whose multimedia work has been shown in several exhibitions around Australia, expressed on Instagram her enthusiasm for being featured at Primavera.

“[I’m] very excited to say I’m in the annual Primavera 2022: Young Australian Artists. Can’t wait to see what the other fellow artists have been working on.” (@sundaricarmody)

Julia Gutman, an artist who reuses found textiles to produce “patchworks” to explore different themes such as femininity, expressed her excitement on social media:

“Someone call my teenage self and pick her gently up from the floor after she faints.” (@julia_gutman)

Originally created in 1992, Primavera is an exhibition whose aim is to bring visibility to new generations of Australian artists across the country. It features artists aged 35 and under. The MCA continues to show enthusiasm and support for young artists through this free exhibition.

The artists will present work in various media including poetry, choreography, scent, weaving, moving images and installation.

“Silence and reflection are recurring motifs within the exhibition, with several artists proposing the need to pause,” says Micheal Do, this year’s curator.

Primavera 2022: Young Australian Artists is bound together by the overwhelming sense that we have inherited, and continue to live through, a global requiem. […] Rather than simply making objects, in Primavera 2022 artists have responded with processes of questioning and discussion, broadly asking how we should live and navigate this requiem.”

Suzanne Cotter, MCA Director, believes Do has put together an exceptional collection for Primavera 2022, and it has mutual benefits for the artists and visitors.

“This exhibition is an important platform for artists’ careers, introducing their work to a wider audience in Australia.
