NSW Police have increased their efforts to catch the arsonists of a local Burwood salon, after two more break in attempts occurred at the business in the last week.
In these two incidents the men who attempted to break in were unsuccessful, however the continued disruptions are affecting the business to continue trading effectively, according to police.
On June 13 two men dramatically broke into a hair salon in Burwood, they set about pouring what appears to be petrol throughout the venue.
In footage released by police today the men can be seen pouring the liquid throughout the venue before one of them slips over in it.
Before fleeing the venue one of the men attempted to start the fire, causing a large fire ball to blast through the venue, however this also caused one of the men to catch fire himself.
Footage from outside the venue shows the man running down the street engulfed in flames in nearby Nicholls Avenue.
In a press conference today NSW police said they hope this footage may help identify the perpetrators.
“At 5am on Friday the 13th of June, 2025 emergency services were called to a commercial premises on Burwood Road, Burwood, in relation to a shop fire” said Detective Acting Superintendent Luke Scott during the press conference held on Monday.
“Police from the Burwood police area command assisted by Fire and Rescue NSW attended the scene where the fire was extinguished. A full evacuation of that building was required as a residential complex was situated above the commercial premises. No injuries were reported to police and minor damage was sustained to the premises” he stated.
Whilst there were no casualties and minor damage, Scott emphasised the need to catch those responsible for the attack when discussing the CCTV footage released today.
“We are attempting to identify the two people depicted in that CCTV [footage] so that we can identify their role in that fire.”
“It is clear that we need to identify who those people are, because not only are they a danger to the community, they are obviously a danger to themselves,”
“It’s quite clear when you watch this CCTV, we are not dealing with professionals, we are dealing with amateurs,” he said.
“I urge anybody in the community who identifies who those people are, knows who those people are or suspects that one of their friends or family may have caught fire on June 13 to come forward.”
“I’m calling on the community to assist us to take this idiot off the road so we can make sure the community remains safe,” Detective Acting Superintendent Luke Scott said.
“The first man is described as being of a medium build and was depicted wearing an orange high-viz jumper and dark-coloured pants with high-viz stripes” NSW Police said in a statement today.
“The second man is described as being of a thin build and was depicted wearing a dark-coloured hooded jumper with white stripes and black pants.”
