In the Pink

In the Pink

The Sydney Roosters will be wearing an alternative kit on June 24 in a move to support the Pull On Your Socks campaign.

The campaign allows grassroots rugby clubs to get involved by purchasing pink socks and holding rugby matches, with the aim of raising awareness of the contributions of women to rugby league.

Playing against the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles in their first home match at Allianz Stadium, the Roosters will celebrate the event by replacing their traditional red-striped jerseys with pink stripes.

The game will be part of the annual Harvey Norman Women in League Round, with Roosters star Anthony Minichiello affirming the importance of the event.

“More and more women are getting involved in rugby league as we are developing as a sport,” he said.

“I think that it’s great for people to notice that and recognise it as well.”

Mr Minichiello hopes that increased support from the community will help to create more opportunities in the sport.

“I think it will create more awareness that women are involved in rugby league, and we’re doing it for a
great charity as well.”

The charity beneficiary of the Women in League match is the McGrath Foundation, which hopes the Pull On Your Socks campaign would be “bigger” and “pinker” this year.

McGrath Foundation Ambassador Tracy Bevan said: “We’re always amazed by the incredible response we receive from the community.

“We can’t wait to see footy clubs across Australia in their pink socks.”

Ms Bevan believes that we can address issues like breast cancer through the continual support of these initiatives.

“Support from Rugby Leagues One Community and the wider football community will go a long way to helping us achieve our goal of ensuring that all Australian families experiencing breast cancer have access to the support of a breast case nurse.”
