PERFORMANCE: DAVE GRANEY’S POINT BLANK

BY ANDREW SMALL

Singer-songwriter Dave Graney has been many things throughout his career: sartorial trailblazer, ARIA Award-winner, onetime ‘King of Pop’. And in Point Blank, he is once again giving his fans something new to chew on.

‘It’s an abstract show about a musician on stage,’ Graney says, ‘it’s like a performer coming onto the stage for a great battle, a heroic and epic journey’ it is very lyrical and narrative.’

Graney will be performing Point Blank with Mark Fitzgibbon on piano and long-time collaborator Clare Moore on percussion and vocals. The trio have performed the same show twice before to an enthusiastic reception, taking out a key award at the 2007 Melbourne Fringe Festival.

Now the show is finally making it to Sydney on October 18, as part of the upcoming series of concerts in The Famous Spiegeltent, on the site of the Sydney Opera House Forecourt. Graney believes the show and venue make a good match.

‘We can’t do the show in a pub or a club. It has to be in some sort of environment where people come along with a view to experiencing something different, so the Spiegeltent will be good for that frame of mind.’
