OUT OF PLACE

OUT OF PLACE

Happy 50th birthday to atyp!

Heralded as Australia’s leading youth theatre company, this fearless organisation is celebrating their anniversary with a bang.

Out of Place is a series of ten monologues exploring themes of belonging, identity and place. Director Paige Rattray (The Sea Project, Dirtyland) describes the play as atmospheric and revitalising. “A lot of young people will identify with it,” she says. “It shows it’s okay to talk about things.”

Written and performed by some of Australia’s most exciting new talent, audiences should expect an evening of diverse experiences as characters are caught outside their comfort zones. “We’ve got clowns, cowboys, singing, movement, mangroves … everything you can think of.”

For Rattray, directing these seven-minute long monologues has its challenges and advantages.

“We have ten different worlds created. When you have more than one actor there’s a tension. With monologues the tension has to come from within and everything has to be really detailed.”

“But even thought it’s all monologues, it’s really an ensemble piece. Everyone is a part of it and has been working together in a really organic way,” she continues. “[The young people] are so positive and ready to get out there and do things. It’s so energising. It’s really changed me.”
