OUT OF PLACE

OUT OF PLACE

You don’t have to be a teenager to relate to the atyp (Australian Theatre for Young People’s) latest offering. Within the ten monologues the protagonist explore an array of issues including divorce, death, loss, sex and being caught outside your comfort zone.

Director Paige Rattray cleverly creates the impression that this is an ensemble piece rather than a night of your standard, run-of-the-mill monologues. The dark stuffy space is awash with moody lighting and chaotic sets, a nod perhaps to the teenage experience. However, the evening is also a celebration of their diversity and their journeys to adulthood.

The night is brimming with moments that are disturbing, funny, poignant, heartwrenching and cringeworthy. But be prepared because in the end it’s 90 straight minutes of what is mostly teen angst, and it’s exhausting.

Until Feb 16, Studio Theatre, Hickson Road, Walsh Bay, $15-25, 9270 2400,atyp.com.au
