A NSW Police officer’s actions during the arrest of a 21-year-old man at Cabramatta train station are being reviewed after mobile phone footage showing the incident was shared online.
The six-second video shows an officer restraining a man on the station platform and striking him several times while the man is on the ground. NSW Police said the footage captured only part of the incident and that the officer was responding to a situation involving reports of a man threatening commuters with a knife.
Police said officers were called after reports of an allegedly aggressive man at Canley Vale station, where a member of the public was allegedly assaulted while attempting to intervene. Police allege the man then travelled to Cabramatta station, where he was located and arrested following a foot chase.
NSW Police said the officer seen in the footage used an “approved manoeuvre” during the arrest. A police statement said the man had been directed to show his hands multiple times following reports from members of the public that he may have been carrying a knife.

Police said no knife was located during a search of the man. They also alleged the man assaulted officers during the arrest and while being taken for medical assessment at Liverpool Hospital. The man has been charged with offences including assault-related matters, resisting police, and interfering with the safety of others.
NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley said police were reviewing body-worn camera footage and that the circumstances surrounding the arrest should be considered before further comment was made.
NSW Police said the incident would be examined as part of the review process and described the publicly shared footage as an “isolated moment” of the broader response officers faced.
The arrest occurred on Monday night at Cabramatta train station, with footage of the incident later circulating on social media.
