Opening in 1932 with the phrase, “art is a weapon” as its motto, the New Theatre has always been about using theatre as a voice for the people. It began as the Sydney Workers Art Club and its inaugural production was The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, a play that espouses social justice and lampoons hypocrisy and inequality.

The New Theatre maintained its subversive stance throughout its history, fostering opposition to oppressive institutions, fighting censorship, embracing counterculture, representing marginalised communities.

Its residence at the south end of King Street, Newtown has been New Theatre’s permanent home since 1973. It has an intimate auditorium with a generous stage and tiered seating.

There’s a bar and small foyer at the entrance and you can usually find parking on King St after 7pm when the clearway restriction ceases. There are plenty of buses from the city and other locations and it’s about equidistant from Newtown, Erskineville or St Peters train stations.
