A man has been charged with murder after stabbing an inner west woman just two weeks after he moved into her home.

Officers were called to the home in Russell Lea on Thursday morning after a member of the public reported hearing a woman scream for help.

The 42-year-old man, who had moved in only weeks before, stabbed the woman multiple times, police allege.

The man was arrested and charged with murder, and is due to appear in Parramatta Local Court on Friday.

Burwood Commander Superintendent Christine McDonald said, “We know that the victim and the other housemates moved into this residence five to six weeks ago. We know that the [person of interest] moved in two to three weeks ago.”

The other five people living at the address were present at the time of the attack.

“They are … upset. The scene that police arrived to, it is very clear that is a homicide. You can imagine if you were known to the victim, you would be extremely distressed,” McDonald said.

She added that she did not believe the man and woman were in an intimate relationship, but that the death was being investigated as a domestic violence incident as they lived together.

Police have said that man had previous “non-violent traffic drug-related” offences but no outstanding matters in relation to bail or any apprehended violence orders taken out against him.

The woman is yet to be formally identified.

According to the Facebook page Counting Dead Women Australia, 37 women have died as of June 27 due to violence against women.
