NEW HEBRIDES AND BLACK GARDENS

NEW HEBRIDES AND BLACK GARDENS

Looming from the white walls of the Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery in Paddington are two new exhibitions, New Hebrides by Daniel Boyd, and Black Gardens by Kathy Temin.
Boyd’s paintings emerge from a sea of dots to coalesce into black and white scenes inspired by historical interactions taking place in Vanuatu, where Boyd’s family originated.
The paintings are an interaction of traditional painting styles with western influences. An impressionistic display that changes according to space, light and the viewer’s perspective.
Boyd’s exhibition is partnered with Kathy Temin’s equally striking sculpture, Black Gardens. Temin’s work continues the black and white colour palette and consists of three tall and imposing creations standing parallel. They combine the softness of fur with the harshness of wood. Each piece is a large standing stone of trees and garden imagery atop a box which could be either a tomb or a receptacle for fertile soil. The pieces represent sorrow, loss and yearning towards light.
The dual exhibitions are an interesting and challenging look at modern themes and worth a visit to this discreet space tucked away in a corner of leafy Paddington.
