NEGLECTED MUSICALS PRESENTS VARIATIONS

Variations, the newest presentation from Neglected Musicals, brings the search for love and fulfilment by three generations of Australian women to the stage of Darlinghurst Theatre for two performances only. Created and set in 1982 by the incomparable Nick Enright and Terence Clarke, Variations (originally titled Chamber Music) was chosen because of its contemporary story. 2013 marks 30 years since this musical debuted, speaking to the heart of the Australian way-of-life. Producer Michelle Guthrie explains the concept of the performances: “It’s not a fully staged production, this is a presentation with minimal rehearsals and script in hand,” she says.

Neglected Musicals are an initiative dedicated to presenting musical theatre that has rarely been seen in Australia, musicals that for one reason or another were not considered commercial enough for Australian audiences. “It is wonderful to present an Australian musical,” enthuses Guthrie. “Audiences get a great opportunity to see a fantastic Australian work on its feet.”

This is a unique and not-for-profit project, where participants like Amanda Bishop and Martin Crewes are volunteers, with all proceeds going to towards the next Neglected Musicals presentation. (LL)
