It sounds like a made-up marketing gimmick, but National Doughnut Day comes from a good place. It dates back to 1938 when the Chicago branch of the Salvation Army decided to dedicate the first Friday of June to the memory of their female volunteers who served doughnuts to soldiers in France during World War I.

The tradition continued as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army, and it spread across the country and across the world. Salvo volunteers have handed out doughnuts to the poor and unhoused in cities everywhere, and in the past, the Salvation Army has partnered with doughnut retailers including one of the biggest, Krispy Kreme.

Tomorrow (June 2) is National Doughnut Day and to commemorate it, Krispy Kreme is giving away 100,000 of their popular Original Glaze doughnuts around the country. All you have to do is pop into a Krispy Kreme store and ask for one of their Original Glaze doughnuts and you’ll get one absolutely free.

If you want the thrill of trying a warm doughnut straight off the production line, then hang around outside a Krispy Kreme store between 5pm and 8pm and wait for the Hot Light to go on. That indicates that Original Glaze doughnuts are on the conveyer belt ready to be dropped warm and fluffy into a box.

Dough not miss out.
