MOVIE: I LOVE YOU TOO

Jim (Brendan Cowell) doesn’t want to grow up. It’s been over three years since he gave up one-night stands and sleazy pub crawls with his best mate Blake (Peter Helliar) for domestic bliss with the comely Alice (Yvonne Strahovski). But his dead-end job and inability to make a meaningful commitment have worn away at her patience. With only weeks until she boards a flight back to London, can Jim finally mature and win her back? A more pertinent question might be whether we should care. Helliar has a support role in this film, but he’s also written the script and his touch is felt throughout. The characters he’s drawn are tired archetypes; you won’t so much recognise Jim as a person you know, but more as someone you’ve seen in a million bad beer commercials. It wouldn’t matter so much if the film’s second act didn’t squeeze each scenario and relationship for tedious melodrama. As always with Helliar’s broad comedy, I Love You Too is calculated not too offend. Nonetheless, it may insult your intelligence. (ABo)
