MOVIE: BRÜNO

Brüno is Borat is Ali G – similar shtick delivered by different characters. Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest offering is the flamboyantly gay Austrian reporter, Brüno. The previously celebrated host of Funkyzeit finds things unravel due to a mishap at Fashion week. After being unceremoniously dumped, he moves to LA to become a famous celebrity. What follows is his guide to seeking fame through desperate and attention-seeking acts (including the acquisition of his new favourite accessory– an adopted, African Gayby.) He offends and shocks by interviewing unsuspecting folks; annoying people; attempting to seduce others; and using the remainder as pawns in jokes that also expose society’s hypocrisy and ridiculous shorthand stereotypes. There is also plenty of cheap humour, slapstick and dirty sex scenes expected from this sex-crazed fashionista, and some moments that will make you really recoil and cringe. Unashamedly crass and crude, Brüno is a funny and interesting trip peppered with tangential humour and Bruno’s (and society’s) obsessions with fashion, celebrity and sex. (NS)
